Vietnam and China Enhance Defense Cooperation

Vietnam's Defense Minister Phan Van Giang has expressed his intention to further strengthen defense cooperation with China. The minister stated that the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defense of Vietnam wish to maintain, develop, and enhance the cooperation points agreed upon by both countries, alongside China's Central Military Commission and Ministry of National Defense. This statement was made at the 13th Xiangshan Forum held in Beijing, underscoring the importance of dialogue between the defense authorities of Vietnam and China. Both nations, which operate under a one-party socialist system, share a complex geopolitical relationship. Potential points of tension, particularly concerning the South China Sea, exist between them. However, cooperation in the defense sector can serve as a crucial channel for managing these issues and preventing accidental conflicts. Vietnam traditionally pursues a "four friends" policy, emphasizing balanced diplomacy with major powers. Strengthening defense cooperation with China is part of this policy and can also be interpreted as a strategic move by Vietnam to ensure its own national security and maintain its regional influence. In the past, exchanges between the armed forces of both countries have occurred intermittently, such as the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army being celebrated in Beijing. Vietnam also actively participates in multilateral forums like the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM+), seeking to define its role in regional security. This move to enhance defense cooperation can be seen as an expression of Vietnam's stance to stabilize relations with China while safeguarding its national interests. The specific areas where cooperation between the two countries will progress remain to be seen, and future developments are anticipated.
