New Bridges and Roads Boost Economy and Traffic Along National Road 1 in Phnom Penh

Infrastructure development in Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, is significantly contributing to the revitalization of the regional economy and the facilitation of traffic flow along National Road 1. Residents and tuk-tuk drivers in the Chbar Ampov district, in particular, have expressed satisfaction with the new development projects. These infrastructure improvements are expected not only to alleviate traffic congestion but also to promote further economic development through faster logistics. Previously, traveling from the Ta Khmau area to Chbar Ampov required passing through the Kabal Thnal area. However, with the newly constructed bridge crossing the Bassac River (between Chak Angre Krom and Prek Pra) and a new road connecting from the east bank of Prek Pra to National Road 1, this route is expected to be significantly shortened. According to a specialist from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the construction of the Bassac River bridge (Chak Angre Krom–Prek Pra) has reached an 85% completion rate as of the first week of September 2026, with the entire project scheduled for completion by mid-2027. This bridge will be the seventh bridge constructed along the Bassac River. Six other bridges have already been completed, including the Koh Pich–Koh Nora Bridge, the Monivong Bridges (two), the Samrong Bridge, the Koh Anlong Chen Bridge, and the Koh Thom Bridge. This infrastructure development symbolizes the expansion of the Phnom Penh metropolitan area and the intensification of economic activities. The development along National Road 1, in particular, is expected to attract domestic and foreign investment, contributing to Cambodia's sustained economic growth.
