Journalist's Home Targeted in Alleged Arson Attempt; Suspect Arrested

MANILA, Philippines — A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an alleged arson attempt on the home of journalist Marlon Ramos in Laguna early Thursday morning, July 16. Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the incident. Ramos recounted in a DZMM interview that the incident occurred past 2 a.m. He and his wife were awakened by the sound of an explosion, and upon opening their bedroom door, they were met with thick, suffocating smoke. The fire was traced to their kitchen. "The smoke is hurting my nose; it's so thick, it's suffocating," Ramos stated. He added, "I was already shouting for help because our house is very close to the guard house." Neighbors and security personnel responded quickly, extinguishing the fire before it could spread, according to media reports. The suspect, identified as "Juber," allegedly brought a pail of gasoline, poured it into the kitchen, and set it ablaze. Ramos revealed that Juber was a friend of his son, whom the family had treated as one of their own. Juber later claimed that Ramos' son had been bullying him. However, Ramos clarified that his son and their classmates had simply been avoiding Juber due to what he described as the suspect's increasingly unusual behavior, strange remarks, and odd social media posts.
