ADB Revises Cambodia's 2026 Growth Forecast Downward Amid Weak Tourism

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has revised Cambodia's economic growth forecast for 2026 to 3.9 percent, down from the 4.1 percent projected in July. This adjustment reflects weaker-than-expected activity in the tourism sector. According to ADB's latest report, Cambodia's economy is anticipated to experience a more moderate growth than initially projected, primarily due to the slower recovery of tourist arrivals and its subsequent impact on related industries. The pace of international tourist recovery has been particularly sluggish, acting as a constraint on the overall growth of the service sector. Tourism has long been a cornerstone of the Cambodian economy. While tourist numbers have gradually increased post-pandemic, they have yet to reach pre-pandemic levels. ADB notes that this slow recovery in tourism is casting a shadow over the growth of associated industries such as hotels, restaurants, and transportation services. However, ADB maintains a positive outlook for other segments of the Cambodian economy. The construction sector and certain manufacturing industries are expected to continue growing, supported by domestic demand and infrastructure investments. Nevertheless, the downward revision of the overall growth rate underscores the critical importance of the tourism industry. This revised forecast suggests the Cambodian government may need to intensify its policy support for tourism recovery and diversification. Enhancing infrastructure, strengthening promotional activities, and exploring new tourism markets will likely be key to future economic growth.
