Cambodian Army Chief Warns Officials Against Involvement in Illegal Fishing, Orders Intensified Crackdown on Tonle Sap Lake
Cambodia's Army Chief has sternly warned officials against protecting or colluding with illegal fishing operators on Tonle Sap Lake, threatening disciplinary and legal action for any involvement. He praised past crackdowns and called for intensified efforts to combat illegal fishing.
General Vong Pisen, Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, led a meeting on Monday to review the work of preventing and suppressing all types of illegal fishing on the Tonle Sap Lake, in accordance with the order of the Prime Minister. From this meeting, the Commander-in-Chief warned officials and local authorities not to be involved with the perpetrators of these offenses. He emphasized that no officials, authorities, or any military forces should be involved or provide protection to the offenders. He warned that if any involvement or collusion is discovered, they will face disciplinary action within the army and legal penalties in accordance with the law. He also instructed that some of the confiscated illegal fishing gears should be destroyed immediately without being used for the suppression mission. According to the report, over the past 18 months, the joint forces, led by the military in cooperation with local authorities, have continuously patrolled, prevented, and suppressed illegal fishing in the geographical areas surrounding Tonle Sap Lake. This operation has led to the arrest of many offenders and the confiscation and destruction of a large number of illegal fishing gears. General Vong Pisen praised and highly appreciated the efforts of the joint forces, the authorities of the five provinces, and all relevant officials who have actively worked together to successfully protect the nation's natural resources and valuable aquatic life. To further strengthen the effectiveness of this work, the General urged the competent forces and relevant authorities to continue to abide by the government's orders to prevent and suppress illegal fishing, forestry, and land encroachment. He stated that all types of competent forces must work together to investigate and suppress illegal activities, build cases, and send offenders to be punished according to the law. In parallel with the crackdown, he said that education must be provided to the public to understand the Fisheries Law so that they can participate in preventing and suppressing offenses, and that the investigation and confiscation of illegal fishing gear must continue.
