Garuda Indonesia's New Baggage Policy Sparks Mixed Reactions Among Travelers

Garuda Indonesia is set to implement the 'piece concept' for checked baggage on tickets purchased or issued from September 1, 2026. For domestic flights, this means one suitcase will be limited to a maximum weight of 23 kilograms, with no option to split or combine this weight allowance across different bags. At Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Terminal 3, passengers shared varied responses to the new policy. Hasanudin found the new regulations manageable, emphasizing the passenger's responsibility for preparation, including weighing luggage beforehand. "Everything has its pros and cons. But we, as passengers, must follow. If we are departing, we have already estimated, for example, whether it's 23 kg," he stated. Najla, on the other hand, viewed the change as a more uniform regulation, similar to what she experiences on international flights. "It feels more uniform because other international flights usually apply the same regulations. When I travel, I don't usually bring many items, so the regulation being calculated by the number of bags or kilos is not a problem, as it has become more comfortable," Najla explained. Agus Iswadi echoed this sentiment, believing the restriction based on the number of bags is acceptable as long as belongings can be arranged properly. "From my perspective, there's no problem because the rule is per luggage, per suitcase. It's not a problem. Perhaps Garuda Indonesia wants to simplify things so that the placement of goods doesn't take up too much space," Agus said. He understands that a system based on the number of bags can simplify item placement but also recognizes it might differ for passengers carrying more items, such as souvenirs. Lilly found the new baggage policy to be practical, stating that the restriction does not significantly impact her as she is accustomed to carrying large bags. "I think it becomes more concise and better. I usually carry large bags, so it seems very convenient for me," Lilly commented. Riadi also commented that the allowance of 23 kilograms for one suitcase on domestic flights is sufficient for his travel needs. "If there's a rule of 23 kg for one suitcase, it's not a problem. One suitcase is enough, all items can be gathered there with the maximum weight, it's sufficient," Riadi stated. The passenger responses suggest that the experience with the new baggage rules can vary. For those who travel with minimal belongings, the policy may offer simplicity, while passengers with more luggage will need to be more meticulous in organizing their items before departure.
