Battambang Governor Inspects Flood Impact, Urges Public Vigilance

Battambang, Cambodia – September 25, 2026 – Battambang Provincial Governor Sok Lu inspected the flood situation in Ak Phnum district on the evening of Friday, September 25, 2026, following a sharp rise in the water level of the Sangkae River due to several days of continuous heavy rainfall. During the inspection, the governor explained that heavy rainfall in recent days, particularly in the upper regions of Samlot district, has caused the Battambang Multi-purpose Dam (Sek Sak) to exceed its storage capacity. Consequently, the Battambang Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology opened the dam gates to release water, alleviating flooding in the upper areas. This action led to a significant increase in the Sangkae River's water level, causing inundation in several districts and towns along the river. The most severe flooding has been observed in Ak Phnum district, which is a low-lying area adjacent to Tonle Sap Lake. Governor Lu instructed the authorities and forces of the affected districts and towns to prepare personnel and equipment for rescue operations to intervene promptly in case of emergencies or further deterioration of the flood situation.
