Remains of 2 Filipino seafarers killed in Strait of Hormuz incident repatriated

The remains of two Filipino seafarers who reportedly died following an incident in the Strait of Hormuz on August 31 have been repatriated to the Philippines, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced. A report by GMA News' Johmer Apresto stated that the families of the two seafarers will receive various forms of government assistance. This repatriation follows the return of 14 other Filipino seafarers aboard the same vessel to the Philippines on September 8. The DMW is continuing its investigation into the manning agency of the seafarers after it was learned that one of the victims had exercised his right to "refuse to sail" upon learning that the vessel would pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Seafarers working abroad are a significant source of foreign exchange for the Philippines, and ensuring their safety is a key priority for the government. This incident highlights the risks faced by Filipino workers due to regional instability.
