PDIP Acknowledges Shared Aspirations with Government, Yet Stresses Opposition Stance

Ganjar Pranowo, a prominent figure from Indonesia's ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), has responded to President Prabowo Subianto's remarks suggesting that PDIP's "heart is the same as the government's." Ganjar clarified that while shared aspirations do not necessitate joining the ruling coalition, the party maintains a commitment to national well-being. "We agree that all political forces have the same responsibility to safeguard the nation and implement the mandate of the 1945 Constitution and all prevailing laws and regulations in accordance with the oath of office. In that sense, our national spirit is certainly the same. However, shared aspirations do not mean all parties must be in the same government ranks," Ganjar told reporters on Friday (24/7/2026). He further elaborated on the democratic system, stating that the division of roles between the government and opposition parties fosters a healthy mechanism for checks and balances, preventing unchecked power and the slide towards absolute rule. Ganjar reiterated that PDIP is not part of the Prabowo-Gibran government coalition. Nevertheless, he assured that PDIP respects the President as the head of government who holds a mandate from the people, while also consistently fulfilling its oversight function. PDIP intends to offer constructive criticism to ensure government policies remain aligned with the constitution and benefit the public. Ganjar added that future political dynamics are unpredictable but emphasized that PDIP's political stance is determined by the people's interests and commitment to democracy, not by the allure of power or positions. Separately, Deddy Sitorus, another PDIP executive, concurred with Prabowo's observation of shared viewpoints. He highlighted PDIP's long-standing advocacy for issues such as eradicating stunting in children and pregnant women, education, people-centered economy, poverty alleviation, rural development, food sovereignty, and the empowerment of fishermen and coastal communities. Despite these shared visions, Sitorus stressed that PDIP will remain outside the government to provide critical input and ensure government programs are effective and efficient. He argued that being an "equilibrium force" outside the government is the most effective position for PDIP to offer such contributions. Sitorus explained that joining the cabinet would hinder PDIP's ability to offer critical feedback, while a completely adversarial stance would be unproductive. PDIP aims to support beneficial policies while reminding and criticizing aspects that deviate from the constitutional path and public interest. Previously, President Prabowo had commented on the political coalition landscape during his administration, noting that while competition is healthy, parties sometimes separate only to reunite later. He suggested that PDIP's heart was fundamentally aligned with his own.
