Cambodia Prioritizes Sustainable Transport for National Development

Cambodian Minister of Public Works and Transport, Peng Ponea, stated that the development of a sustainable transport network is a crucial priority for national development. He made these remarks during his keynote speech at the Global Sustainable Transport Forum 2026, held in Beijing on September 22, 2026. The forum was presided over by Li Yang, Vice Minister of Transport of the People's Republic of China, and attended by ministers and vice ministers from 28 countries, as well as representatives from numerous international organizations and the private sector. In his address, Minister Peng Ponea underscored the significance of sustainable transport as a cornerstone for economic resilience, regional integration, trade, and sustainable development. He informed the forum that for Cambodia, sustainable transport is a key development priority under the 'Pentagon Strategy Phase 1.' The country is actively developing various infrastructures, including roads, expressways, railways, ports, airports, waterways, and logistics centers, as well as urban transport systems. The primary objectives of this sustainable development are to enhance connectivity, reduce logistics costs, facilitate trade, improve traffic safety, and create more opportunities for citizens and businesses. Furthermore, the minister emphasized the importance of technology and innovation in transforming the transport sector, noting Cambodia's efforts to promote digital public services and intelligent transport systems. The Global Sustainable Transport Forum 2026 focused on the theme: 'Sustainable Transport: Easier Passenger Transport and Smoother Cargo Flow.'
