Cambodian Minister Inspects Mekong Riverbank Collapse, Urges Swift Action
Cambodian Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, Thor Cheuntha, inspected a Mekong Riverbank collapse in Kampong Cham province. He ordered immediate measures using sandbags and urged detailed studies for a robust, multi-purpose revetment project in close cooperation with local authorities.
PHNOM PENH, June 29, 2026 -- H.E. Thor Cheuntha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, on the afternoon of Monday, June 29, 2026, led technical officials from the ministry and provincial departments, along with H.E. Un Chanda, Governor of Kampong Cham Provincial Administration, and local authorities, to further inspect the situation of the Mekong Riverbank that has collapsed in Village 15, Kampong Cham Sangkat, Kampong Cham City, Kampong Cham Province. It is to be noted that the Mekong Riverbank in the aforementioned area collapsed on the night of January 30, 2026. H.E. the Minister has set out provisional measures to prevent further collapse of the Mekong Riverbank by using sandbags (GeoTextile). H.E. the Minister urged the technical working group to conduct detailed studies of the riverbank situation in close cooperation with relevant local authorities to ensure the implementation of a durable, high-quality, and aesthetically pleasing riverbank construction project for multi-purpose use and for the benefit of the people in Kampong Cham province.
