Loggerhead Sea Turtle Rehabilitated and Released in Zamboanga del Norte

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur — A loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) was released back into the sea after undergoing rehabilitation, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO) Manukan reported on Aug. 2. Manukan CENRO Officer Reynaldo Cuaresma said the marine turtle was rescued on July 30 following a report and was then treated at the Manukan CENRO. It was released back to the sea on Aug. 2 after it had recovered. The rescue and release of the turtle highlight ongoing efforts at the local level to protect marine wildlife, particularly endangered sea turtle species. The Philippines, with its extensive coastline and rich marine biodiversity, is a crucial habitat and nesting ground for sea turtles. However, these creatures face numerous threats, including marine pollution, bycatch in fisheries, and habitat destruction. Individual rescue efforts like this underscore the importance of broader conservation strategies. The DENR, in collaboration with local communities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), works to raise awareness, combat poaching, and conserve nesting sites. The successful release of this loggerhead sea turtle serves as a testament to the impact of grassroots conservation initiatives in preserving the Philippines' rich biodiversity.
