Cambodia Revokes Journalist's Press Card Amid Fraud Allegations

The Ministry of Information of Cambodia announced on August 31 that it has terminated the validity of the press card belonging to journalist Preab Phanny, affiliated with the website www.nmrtvnews.com.kh. According to a notice from the General Directorate of Information and Audiovisual, Phanny is accused of illegally using the name of Sok Prasith, a direct advisor to the Prime Minister and Secretary of State at the Ministry of Information, to facilitate illegal activities and extort money from others. The ministry stated that Phanny's actions lacked any shame or fear of the law. An assistant to Sok Prasith announced on the night of August 28 that they were preparing documents and a complaint to take legal action against the individual named Preab Phanny, with no exceptions. Therefore, the public is urged not to misunderstand Sok Prasith regarding the fraudulent and deceptive acts of Preab Phanny, as Sok Prasith was unaware of any of these actions. This incident highlights Cambodia's firm stance against the misuse of public officials' names and underscores the importance of journalistic ethics. While media freedom is guaranteed in Cambodia, journalistic activities are expected to adhere to laws and ethics.
