Cambodia Participates in 81st UN General Assembly Session, Underscoring Global Engagement

Cambodia joined fellow United Nations member states Tuesday for the opening of the 81st session of the General Assembly, as the world body begins a new year of debate on pressing international issues. Cambodia’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Keo Chhea, attended the ceremony at the General Assembly Hall in New York. The session was presided over by UN Secretary‑General António Guterres and Khalilur Rahman, the newly appointed president of the 81st General Assembly. The formal opening followed the conclusion of the 80th session earlier in the day. Rahman, a former foreign minister of Bangladesh, took the oath of office during the closing of the previous session before receiving the ceremonial gavel from Annalena Baerbock, who presided over the Assembly’s 80th session. The handover marked Rahman’s assumption of the presidency for the coming year. As president, Rahman will oversee the work of the Assembly as representatives of 193 member states address issues ranging from international peace and security to sustainable development and global cooperation. Cambodia’s participation in the opening session reflects its continued engagement with the UN on both international and regional matters. The General Assembly is the UN’s main deliberative body, providing a platform for all member states to present positions, debate global challenges and adopt resolutions within its mandate. The 81st session is expected to highlight cooperation through the multilateral system, offering countries an opportunity to reaffirm commitments and advance dialogue on shared priorities.
