In Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, a social activist, identified as a critic of the government, has been brought to trial on charges of inciting severe social unrest and insulting national leaders through her social media posts concerning border issues with a neighboring country. The Phnom Penh Municipal Court commenced hearings on this case on the morning of September 21. The accused, identified as Hem Mom, also known as Khem Sreymom, is a 35-year-old female land rights activist residing in a rented room in Chom Chao 1 commune, Por Senchey district, Phnom Penh. Prosecutors allege that the defendant, through her Facebook activities during May 2026, engaged in inciting severe social unrest and insulting top national leaders in relation to border issues with a neighboring country. The accused faces charges under Articles 494, 496, and 502 of the Penal Code. She was arrested by authorities on May 16, 2026, pursuant to a court warrant.
