Cambodia Encourages Women and Youth to Run for Commune/Sangkat Council Seats

Dr. Thon Vathana, Second Vice President of the Senate of Cambodia, has strongly encouraged women and youth to run for office in greater numbers in the upcoming commune/sangkat council elections. He also urged all political parties to consider nominating these candidates in winnable positions, expressing hope for the election of female councilors in every commune and sangkat across the country. During a meeting with the seven sangkat council members of Por Sen Chey district in Phnom Penh on the afternoon of July 23, 2026, Dr. Vathana praised the authorities and citizens for their cooperation in organizing road order and the aesthetics of the district. He also urged local authorities to strive to provide excellent public services to the people and to develop their localities by focusing on five priority tasks: security, economy, society, construction, and aesthetics. Dr. Vathana requested all levels of local authorities to consider the benefit of the people and to cooperate in finding solutions to various challenges at the local level, emphasizing that working together will help tasks be completed quickly and effectively. Furthermore, Dr. Vathana expressed his support for the leadership of the Royal Government and the high leadership of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate, in peacefully resolving the Cambodia-Thailand border issue based on diplomacy and international law.
