Vietnam Military Court Sentences Robbery Convict in First Online Trial
Vietnam's military court has sentenced a defendant to 7 years and 6 months in prison for robbery, after stealing copper wire from telecommunication stations and threatening a technician. Vietnam's military court held its first online trial on July 10, sentencing Ma Duy Nhat to 7 years and 6 months in prison for robbery. He infiltrated three telecommunication stations in Lang Son province, stealing copper wire valued at approximately 5.6 million VND (around $220 USD). Furthermore, at a Viettel Lang Son station, he brandished a knife and threatened network technician Le Van Hoang, seizing his mobile phone and SIM card. Nhat confessed to selling the stolen copper wire and spending the proceeds of 5.273 million VND on personal expenses. During the trial, Nhat fully admitted his guilt and expressed remorse. The court deemed his actions extremely serious, infringing on property rights, threatening the safe operation of base stations, and endangering the lives, health, and property of citizens. However, considering his confession and remorse, the court granted leniency. Consequently, he received a 7-year, 6-month sentence for robbery and was ordered to pay compensation to Viettel Lang Son, Viễn thông Lạng Sơn, and MobiFone Lang Son. Following the trial, a debriefing conference was held, presided over by Major General Hoang Huu Quy, Deputy Chief Justice of the Central Military Court.
