AI Summary

Vietnam is accelerating legislative reviews and expanding green finance to adapt to global supply chain greening trends. This move aims to enhance the sustainability and international competitiveness of its manufacturing sector, including electronics, presenting both opportunities for new investment and technological transfer, and challenges.

Vietnam is accelerating legislative reviews and expanding green finance to adapt to the growing demands for greener global supply chains. This move is particularly significant for its electronics industry, which is increasingly scrutinized under international environmental standards. Assoc. Prof. and Dr. Ngo Tri Long of the Vietnam Financial Consulting Association proposed reviewing legislation across the entire chain of economic activities to identify and address key points of intersection in support of the green and circular transition. The aim is to prevent legal gaps and enable waste to genuinely become a resource. Over the past five years, Vietnam has developed and gradually implemented a green finance system to support low-emission and environmentally friendly production, including agriculture. Based on directives from the State Bank of Vietnam, banks like BIDV, VCB, HDBank, and Agribank have introduced green credit packages for sectors such as waste treatment, high-tech agriculture, digital transformation, regional linkages, and emission reduction across production chains. Vietnam's strategic orientation for sustainable development, approved by the Prime Minister in 2004, already included waste treatment technologies, clean energy, recycling, and environmental protection, signaling a long-term commitment. Localities are also stepping up. Hai Phong city is committed to building an enabling administration that acts decisively and provides excellent services to residents and businesses. Meanwhile, a festival aims to raise public awareness of green, low-emission rice production and boost the quality and competitiveness of Vietnamese rice. Opportunities for collaboration are being explored, with overseas Vietnamese (OV) entrepreneurs seen as a valuable source of knowledge, technology, finance, and international relations. Provinces like An Giang are preparing to showcase urban development, key industries, and investment prospects at expos, promoting their industrial parks and tourism resources. International cooperation is also being fostered. The Vietnam Industrial Park Supply Enterprises Association and the Korea-Vietnam Association of Science and Technology signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding to help thousands of firms expand globally. Bilateral trade with major partners like Thailand continues to show strong growth, with trade reaching over $22 billion in 2025 and growing robustly this year. For the electronics industry, the global greening trend necessitates investment in new technologies and production processes to reduce environmental impact throughout the product lifecycle. While this may require significant adjustments, it also presents opportunities for partnerships with environmental technology firms and increased demand for sustainable products.
