Cambodia Intensifies Crackdown on Transnational Drug Trafficking Amidst Rise of Diverse Suspects

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sar Sokha, has strongly urged all law enforcement forces to further strengthen the prevention and suppression of transnational drug offenses, emphasizing that the drug problem remains a significant concern not only for Cambodia but for the entire region. Sokha highlighted that despite a notable increase in drug seizures and destruction, with confiscations sometimes reaching nearly one ton at once, these offenses continue to occur and are becoming increasingly complex. He encouraged law enforcement to utilize intelligence systems and surveillance methods more effectively and deeply to track drug suspects, aiming to dismantle large-scale trafficking networks. He further added that through recent close cooperation with the management of Phnom Penh International Airport, authorities have identified a shift in the profile of suspects smuggling narcotics or dried cannabis out of Cambodia. Unexpectedly, individuals of various nationalities, including Korean, Japanese, Malaysian, and Singaporean citizens, have been found to be involved in this trafficking. This development underscores Cambodia's recognition of the importance of international cooperation and information sharing in combating drug crimes, moving beyond a purely domestic approach to address broader criminal networks. The diversification of suspects poses greater challenges to countermeasures while simultaneously highlighting the necessity for enhanced collaboration with the international community.
