Deep South police station attacked, school closed amid renewed security concerns

Gunmen fired shots at the Lam Mai police station in Muang district of Yala province on Monday morning, August 5th. The attack occurred around 7:55 AM, with assailants reportedly approaching the station from a forest and rubber plantation at the rear. Police returned fire, engaging in a brief shootout lasting a few minutes, but no casualties were reported on either side. However, at Ban Paron elementary school, located opposite the police station, the principal decided to temporarily close the school for the safety of students who were arriving for classes. The children were immediately sent back to their parents or guardians. Pol Maj Gen Kong-at Suwannakham, chief of Yala police, ordered maximum security measures and strict searches of local vehicles as the hunt for the shooters intensified. The area was cordoned off, and bomb disposal experts were deployed to ensure safety. Police stations in Thailand's Deep South frequently come under attack by separatist militants. In late May, a police station in Sai Buri district of Pattani province was attacked, resulting in the death of one policeman. In July, a car bomb detonated at another police station in Muang district of Narathiwat, causing minor injuries to one officer. This incident highlights the ongoing conflict and security challenges in southern Thailand, a region with a long history of tension between separatist movements and the government, leading to persistent civilian and security force casualties.
