Indonesian DPD to Bring Regional Perspectives to World Parliament Forum

The Indonesian Regional Representative Council (DPD) plans to bring the perspectives of Indonesia's regions and its diversity to the upcoming 3rd Inter-Parliamentary Speakers' Conference (ISC). DPD Chairman Sultan B. Najamudin stated that as a regional representation institution, the DPD wants to incorporate these regional viewpoints into global conversations. According to Najamudin, global issues such as climate change, development inequality, welfare, and environmental sustainability directly impact people in various regions, necessitating that regional interests be given space in discussions between world parliaments. Indonesia was previously elected as the host for the 3rd ISC by acclamation during a meeting of parliamentary leaders at the 2nd ISC in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This decision was recorded in the Phnom Penh Declaration and officially announced to conference participants, who were leaders of parliaments from 40 countries. Najamudin views this trust as an honor and a strategic opportunity for Indonesia to play a greater role in building dialogue and cooperation among world parliaments. He highlighted Indonesia's experience in maintaining unity amidst diversity as a crucial capital for presenting a forum that opens space for dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation. The ISC is a forum that brings together parliamentary leaders from various countries to engage in dialogue on strategic world issues, including peace, compliance with international law, welfare, the environment, and sustainable development. For the DPD, the forum also serves as a platform to introduce the perspectives of island nations and regional interests into global discussions. Najamudin emphasized that the world today needs more spaces for dialogue and cooperation amidst challenges of global uncertainty. He added that parliaments play a vital role in ensuring that people's aspirations, along with interests in peace, justice, and sustainability, become part of the common agenda.
