Myanmar nationals detained in Malaysia to be repatriated only upon their own volition, says Myanmar Embassy in Kuala Lumpur

Regarding the repatriation of Myanmar nationals detained in Malaysia, the Myanmar Embassy in Kuala Lumpur announced on September 21 that only those who express their own volition to return will be repatriated. The Myanmar Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is conducting nationality verification for Myanmar nationals detained in 15 detention centers under the Malaysian Immigration Department, in order to repatriate them to Myanmar as soon as possible. This verification process is being carried out in cooperation with relevant ministries, and is limited to those who have expressed their own volition to return, with repatriation procedures underway. It is understood that preliminary nationality verification lists by camp and lists of individuals to be repatriated by camp will be published on the Myanmar Embassy's social media page, "Myanmar Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia," along with the date, time, and flight numbers for repatriation to Myanmar. In August 2026, after nationality verification of 71 individuals from the Melaka Camp Immigration Detention Center, a list of 54 individuals who could present sufficient evidence and be issued a Certificate of Identity, and 17 individuals with insufficient evidence, was published. For those with insufficient evidence, it is understood that procedures such as contacting family members and relatives/friends for their supporting documents and sending information to the relevant ministries for examination and approval will continue to be carried out in accordance with procedures and regulations, and those who can be examined and approved will be continuously announced and notified in a timely manner. The embassy is issuing this notification so that the families of those identified as Myanmar nationals and those to be repatriated can be informed, and to facilitate their welcome upon arrival in Myanmar. The Myanmar Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has announced this because it has been informed by the individuals themselves that incidents of non-family members demanding money by fraudulent means have occurred regarding Myanmar nationals in detention centers, and therefore, the embassy urges the relevant family members to proceed with caution.
