Dong Thap: Do Cong Tuong Couple's Death Anniversary - Preserving Cultural Values and Connecting Communities

In Cao Lanh city, Dong Thap province, the 206th death anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Do Cong Tuong, revered for their contributions to regional development, was held from July 20-23. This event serves as a significant occasion for preserving traditional culture and strengthening community bonds. During the festival, traditional ceremonies were complemented by cultural and sports activities, along with booths showcasing local specialties and cuisine. A highlight this year was a mapping projection show on the Cao Lanh River, followed by a fireworks display, offering visitors a novel experience and enhancing the festival's appeal. Local residents demonstrated community solidarity by providing free food and drinks. The festival attracted approximately 100,000 attendees, a record high, despite rain on the final day. Visitors came to pay respects to the couple's legacy and enjoy the festive atmosphere, with many traveling from provinces like An Giang, as well as from central and northern regions. Mr. and Mrs. Do Cong Tuong migrated to the area in the early 19th century and were instrumental in establishing a local market. Their humanitarian act of vowing to sacrifice themselves for the people during a cholera epidemic in 1820 is deeply honored. Following their passing, the region recovered from the epidemic, and the market continued to prosper. A shrine was erected by residents to commemorate their merits, with the anniversary festival held annually. In 2019, the tomb and shrine of Mr. and Mrs. Do Cong Tuong were recognized as a national historical and cultural heritage site. An official from the Cao Lanh City People's Committee emphasized that the festival is not merely a traditional ritual but an opportunity to reflect on history, express gratitude to ancestors, and inherit the valuable legacy left by the couple.
