Vietnam, Indonesia Eye AI, Semiconductor Cooperation Potential

Vietnam and Indonesia possess significant potential to strengthen cooperation in the artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor industries by leveraging their complementary advantages, according to Lamijo, a researcher at Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Lamijo shared these insights in a recent interview with the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) correspondent in Jakarta. He noted Indonesia's prioritization of energy independence and green transition under its new policy, and also referenced an Indonesian expert's view that Vietnam will play an increasingly important role in the ASEAN Community Vision 2045. Vietnam has been establishing itself as a manufacturing hub in recent years, particularly excelling in electronics assembly and component supply. Indonesia, on the other hand, aims to expand investment in research and development, supported by its abundant natural resources and large domestic market. In the AI sector, the synergy between Vietnam's technological capabilities in data analysis and software development, and Indonesia's strengths in applied research and market development, could foster new innovations. For semiconductors, Vietnam could serve as a part of the supply chain, while Indonesia might eventually engage in material supply or specific manufacturing processes, creating a mutually beneficial relationship. Vietnam's economic growth under its one-party system has actively attracted foreign direct investment and driven industrial upgrading. The focus on advanced technology fields like AI and semiconductors is part of Vietnam's strategy to transition from a mere production base to higher value-added industries. While Vietnam has strong economic ties with China, strengthening regional cooperation within ASEAN is significant for diversifying geopolitical risks and acquiring technology.
