Battambang's Pouthisat Oranges See Strong Sales, Boosting Farmer Income

Pouthisat oranges from Ou Khcheay in Sangke district, Battambang province, are experiencing strong market sales compared to last year, contributing to increased income for farmers. Local traders report that due to rising demand for oranges, they are able to procure and sell them two to three times a day, boosting their earnings and meeting customer needs. Ms. Chon Chanthey, a seasoned trader of Ou Khcheay oranges along the old National Road No. 5, stated that this year's Pouthisat oranges are selling better than last year, with a particularly delicious taste that is making it difficult to meet customer demand. Ms. Chanthey mentioned that she brings in oranges twice a day and can earn between 25,000 to 48,000 riels (approximately $6 to $12) per sale, depending on the size of the fruit, which comes in three categories. A sale typically takes only 3 to 4 hours, a significant improvement compared to last year. "Last year, I could only sell once a day, and my income was minimal," she recalled. According to Ms. Chanthey, the absence of imports is also a factor contributing to the strong performance of domestic oranges in the market. Meanwhile, Mr. Chheun Rorn, a resident of Ou Khcheay Kert village, Ou Dambong 1 commune, Sangke district, has been cultivating oranges for generations, with his family continuing the tradition to support their livelihood. Mr. Rorn stated that buyers always come to his farm to purchase oranges during the harvest season, and this year, the price of Pouthisat oranges has significantly increased compared to previous years. Ms. Channiy, who was selecting oranges, confirmed that this year's Ou Khcheay Pouthisat oranges have a superior taste compared to last year, and the price has risen to 30,000 riels per batch (40 fruits). Last year, she purchased a similar grade for only 22,000 riels, but the taste was not comparable to this year's. Owners of Pouthisat orange farms are appealing to consumers to support local produce more, benefiting farmers.
