Vietnam focuses on core capabilities to elevate semiconductor industry: expert

Vietnam's ultimate goal in the semiconductor industry should not merely be to establish a presence, but to gradually master high-value, knowledge-intensive segments of the value chain and become a key link in the global semiconductor supply chain. Experts emphasize that investing in core capabilities is crucial for achieving this objective. Such a strategy is expected to provide a strong launch pad for strengthening the country's competitiveness in artificial intelligence (AI), electronics, and the digital economy. The Vietnamese government is actively seeking to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) into the semiconductor sector, while simultaneously aiming to expand investments in AI. As a specific example, the central city of Da Nang is exploring a partnership with Pyeongtaek, South Korea's hub for semiconductors and high technology. This illustrates Vietnam's intent to enhance its industrial base through international technological cooperation and collaboration. Furthermore, Vietnam has announced a policy to focus on workforce training not only for the semiconductor industry but also for future-oriented sectors such as hydrogen energy and carbon credits. This reflects Vietnam's long-term vision to balance economic diversification with considerations for sustainability. Under its one-party system, Vietnam tends to strongly promote state-led industrial policies. Large-scale investments and development in advanced technology fields like semiconductors are aimed at driving economic growth while simultaneously enhancing geopolitical significance.
