Cambodia: 6 Dead in Drug and Domestic Violence Incident, Authorities Intensify Investigation

A tragic incident involving drug use and domestic violence has occurred in Poipet province, Cambodia, resulting in the deaths of five police officers and militia members, along with the perpetrator, and one militia member suffering serious injuries. The incident took place around 5:00 PM on August 5, 2026, in the Ou Bay Kriem area of O'Som commune. The incident began when the suspect's wife reported her husband's domestic violence to the O'Som commune police chief. Upon receiving the report, a team of seven police officers and militia members, led by Colonel Som Ra, rushed to the scene. However, the suspect threatened the responding officers with a bomb. As police and militia members attempted to apprehend the suspect, the bomb detonated, killing five police officers and militia members, the perpetrator, and seriously injuring one militia member. The deceased have been identified as Colonel Som Ra, chief of O'Som commune police; Lieutenant Colonel Sao Sovannarith, a police officer; and militia members Chhorn Prem, Sok Ann, and Chinda. The perpetrator, Eam Dom, also died in the incident, while militia member Vey Voeun sustained serious injuries. In response to the incident, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sar Sokha, has instructed the General Commissariat of National Police and the Poipet Provincial Police to prioritize the funeral arrangements for the fallen officers and militia members. He also called for the continuation of investigations into drug trafficking networks in the area and the source of the explosives used by the perpetrator. The Ministry of Interior and Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha extended their deepest condolences to the bereaved families, stating that this tragedy underscores that drugs are "the enemy of all of us and a vicious murderer."
