Vietnam, Indonesia Eye Deeper Cooperation in AI, Semiconductors

Vietnam and Indonesia possess significant potential to strengthen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) and the semiconductor industry by capitalising on their complementary advantages, a researcher from Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency told the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) correspondent in Jakarta. This move to bolster cooperation is underpinned by the signing of the "2026–2030 Action Plan to realise the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries" during the official visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung to Indonesia on July 14. The action plan was signed alongside the sixth meeting of the Vietnam - Indonesia Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation, co-chaired by Minister Trung and his Indonesian counterpart, Sugiono. Both sides noted that since the fifth meeting, sectoral cooperation has continued to deepen and produce concrete results, despite global headwinds and a challenging international economic backdrop. This indicates Vietnam's emphasis on international collaboration, particularly in advanced technology sectors, as it continues its economic growth. Under Vietnam's one-party system, the Party and the State lead the nation's development strategy. The strengthening of cooperation in AI and semiconductors aligns with Vietnam's new development model, which designates "science and technology, innovation, digital transformation and artificial intelligence as the main growth drivers." International collaboration in these fields is essential for Vietnam as it aims to improve people's lives and achieve sustainable development. Furthermore, Vietnam is also focusing on strengthening ties with its neighbouring countries. On July 29, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung sent a message of condolences to earthquake victims in Japan, and commitments to deepen parliamentary cooperation and party-to-party relations were reaffirmed with Cambodia and Laos. These developments suggest Vietnam is pursuing a foreign policy that pursues its national interests while emphasising regional stability and coordination. This is crucial for domestic economic growth and social stability, and it is a particularly important factor in managing Vietnam's complex relationship with China.
