Chiang Rai Deploys AI and Drones to Combat Severe Flooding

CHIANG RAI – The National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) is taking bold new steps to protect its residents from devastating natural disasters. Following severe flooding and several earthquakes, the province is turning to advanced technology for help. Officials recently launched a new campaign to test high-tech tools in real-world disaster scenarios. The initiative focuses on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drone technology into flood management. AI aims to analyze vast amounts of data, including weather patterns, river water levels, and topographical information, to predict the timing, scale, and potential impact areas of floods with high accuracy. This will enable authorities to issue more timely and precise evacuation advisories and implement countermeasures. Drones, on the other hand, will be utilized for real-time monitoring of flooded areas, assessing damage, delivering emergency supplies to isolated regions, and even assisting in search and rescue operations for victims. This is expected to facilitate rapid information gathering and support activities that were previously difficult with traditional methods. Chiang Rai Province is one of the regions in Thailand that frequently experiences natural disasters, particularly floods. In recent years, extreme weather events, believed to be linked to climate change, have led to an increasing frequency and intensity of floods. The introduction of advanced technologies like AI and drones demonstrates the Thai government's proactive stance on these challenges and positions it as a potential future model for disaster prevention and mitigation.
