Thai PM Defends China Stance, Dismisses Taiwan Concerns on Economic Ties

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Thursday dismissed Taiwan's disappointment over the China-Thailand Joint Statement's reaffirmation of the "One China" policy, asserting that Thailand's stance remains unchanged and will not affect economic ties. Speaking at Government House, Mr Anutin stated, "Thailand has always maintained the One China policy. It is nothing new." His remarks followed Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressing dissatisfaction with the language in the joint statement issued during his official visit to China from July 16-20. The statement had reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to the "One China" policy, recognized Beijing's government as the sole legal representation of China, described Taiwan as an inalienable part of China, opposed Taiwanese independence, and voiced support for China's "One Country, Two Systems" policy. Taiwan rejected these assertions as distorting facts and undermining its sovereignty. In a statement on July 21, Taiwan's foreign ministry declared it "strongly protests" against what it termed false narratives promoted by Beijing and expressed "disappointment and regret" that Thailand had aligned with China in diminishing Taiwan's sovereign status. The ministry reiterated its position that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country, and that Taiwan and the People's Republic of China are not subordinate to one another. It also urged Thailand to value the longstanding friendship, economic ties, and people-to-people exchanges between the two sides, warning that continued cooperation with Beijing in suppressing Taiwan could undermine regional peace and stability. When questioned about Taiwan's criticism, Mr Anutin responded, "That is their position. We acknowledge it. Our policy is clear." He dismissed suggestions that Thailand's stance could affect economic relations with Taiwan, stating there would be no impact on trade, investment, or other forms of cooperation. Asked whether Thailand would seek to explain its position to Taiwan, he replied that both sides already understood each other. Mr Anutin also rejected suggestions that Bangkok was siding with Beijing against Taipei. Regarding speculation on social media about potential Taiwanese reviews of visa privileges for Thai visitors or measures affecting Thai workers, Mr Anutin reiterated that Thailand's position remained unchanged.
