Indonesia to Integrate Tuberculosis Control into National Development Plans

The Indonesian Ministry of Home Affairs has announced its policy to prioritize tuberculosis (TB) control across the entire national development planning framework, including the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD), Regional Development Plan (RKPD), and Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBD). This decision aims to establish a more strategic and integrated approach to achieving the national goal of TB eradication. The RPJMD typically outlines the national development guidelines for a five-year period, while the RKPD operationalizes these guidelines at the regional level. The APBD forms the core of regional government financial management. By explicitly including TB control in these plans, it is expected that its priority in budget allocation and policy implementation will be elevated. Indonesia is one of the countries with a high TB incidence rate globally, posing a significant public health challenge. While TB control measures have been undertaken previously, integrating them into the national plans is seen as a crucial step for ensuring the sustainability and maximizing the effectiveness of these efforts. The Ministry of Home Affairs intends to work closely with regional governments to support the implementation of effective TB control measures tailored to local conditions. This initiative is expected to drive a range of policies, including the improvement of healthcare infrastructure, enhanced access to diagnosis and treatment, and strengthened awareness campaigns. Reducing the stigma associated with TB by encouraging community participation will also be a key challenge.
