6 Retired SAF Dogs Find New Homes in Adoption Program
The Philippine National Police's Special Action Force (SAF) has successfully transitioned six retired explosive detection dogs to new homes through its adoption program. Most of the Belgian Malinois canines were adopted by their former handlers, highlighting the strong bond formed during their service.
MANILA, Philippines — After doing their share in keeping the country safe, six retired explosive detection dogs have found new homes where they can spend the remainder of their lives in comfort. The canines – Philip, Argus, Nitro, Jacob, Chaka and Jersy – were welcomed into their new homes through the Special Action Force (SAF)’s explosive detection dog adoption program. The canines, all Belgian Malinois, spent years supporting critical security operations and helping detect explosive threats, according to Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. Of the six dogs, Jersy served the longest at over 10 years from Sept. 12, 2012 to Nov. 3, 2023. Nartatez said most of the adopters were the dogs’ former handlers, whose bond with their K9 partners was built through years of training, trust and shared missions.
