Thai Govt to Cap MRT Fares at 45 Baht to Ease Public Burden

The Thai government is advancing its policy to alleviate the cost of living for the public by integrating all train lines with a maximum fare of 45 baht per trip. This initiative aims to reduce travel expenses for citizens using public transportation and increase the convenience of inter-system transfers, thereby encouraging greater use of public transit. Ploytaluk Laksamichan, Deputy Government Spokesperson, stated that the committee tasked with driving the policy to reduce public transport fares, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, has approved the measure. The policy sets the maximum fare at 45 baht per trip, without additional entry fees for transfers between different train lines, in line with existing contractual agreements. This measure will cover the entire rail network in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces. Furthermore, the government is preparing the necessary systems and equipment. EMV contactless technology, compatible with credit cards, debit cards, and the 'Mangmoom' card, is being established as the primary system for travel. The installation and modification of equipment across the rail network are being accelerated to support the official launch of this policy, targeted for January 1, 2027. To ensure effective implementation, relevant agencies are tasked with rapidly developing the systems and equipment, establishing guidelines for fare calculation and refunds, and defining passenger rights, complaint resolution procedures, and joint system testing prior to the official service commencement. This comprehensive approach aims to maximize the benefits for the public. Regarding fare calculation, initial charges will be based on the actual travel value. If the calculated fare exceeds the 45 baht cap, the government will refund the difference to passengers within three business days through the 'Pao Tang' application or their travel card account, according to the defined criteria.
