76 Rural Roads in Mondulkiri Become Economic Arteries, Connecting Agriculture and Tourism

In Mondulkiri province, Cambodia, 76 rural roads managed by the Provincial Department of Rural Development are playing a crucial role as economic arteries. These roads connect villages to communes, communes to districts, and further link to key agricultural areas, production zones, and tourist destinations. This connectivity facilitates smoother travel and transportation of agricultural products, thereby boosting local economic activities. Thun Sary, Director of the Provincial Department of Rural Development, told "Kampuchea Thmey" on July 30th that the total length of these 76 rural roads is 716.240 kilometers. This network includes roads paved with DBST (Double Bituminous Surface Treatment), reinforced concrete roads, and red gravel-surfaced roads. He emphasized that the Department of Rural Development continuously prioritizes the maintenance and repair of these roads to ensure smooth and safe traffic and transportation throughout all seasons, with plans to repair approximately 19 kilometers of roads annually. Currently, teams are implementing annual road maintenance projects on 10 road sections, totaling 99.8 kilometers. This includes one DBST-paved road section of 3.5 kilometers in Svay Chrum village, Sen Monorom city, and nine gravel-surfaced road sections totaling 96.3 kilometers located in Koh Nhek, Pech Chreada, and Keo Seima districts. These projects have achieved 100% completion for the first phase, with the second phase scheduled for completion by December 2026. In addition to these, the department is also undertaking two annual repair projects on road sections totaling 8 kilometers in Pou Chrey commune, Pech Chreada district, with approximately 90% completion. An emergency intervention repair project of one section, 3 kilometers in length, has also been completed 100%. Director Thun Sary highlighted that these 76 rural roads not only facilitate the movement of citizens but also serve as vital economic arteries for transporting agricultural products, industrial crops, and goods from rural areas to markets. These road networks help reduce transportation time and costs, enhance commercial efficiency, and attract investment.
