Vietnam's Top Leader Meets Canadian PM, Strengthening Bilateral Ties

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President Tô Lâm held talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Ottawa on September 24 (local time) during his state visit to Canada. The two leaders discussed ways to further deepen the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Canada. The meeting took place as Vietnam seeks to expand its influence on the international stage and maintain its economic growth. General Secretary and President Tô Lâm also met with Governor General of Canada Louise Arbour, emphasizing the importance of friendly relations between the two nations. The Canadian side extended a warm welcome to the Vietnamese leader, with a formal welcoming ceremony held. This visit is seen as part of Vietnam's foreign policy, which prioritizes multilateral relations and aims to strengthen ties with developed countries in particular. Under its one-party system, Vietnam has made economic development its top priority, and stabilizing external relations is crucial for its domestic socio-economic stability and growth. Strengthening ties with developed democracies like Canada is considered beneficial for building Vietnam's international credibility.
