Dong Thap Province's Resolve to Protect Aquatic Resources and Biodiversity in the Mekong Delta

Dong Thap Province, located in Vietnam's southern Mekong Delta, has demonstrated a firm resolve to protect its rich, region-specific aquatic resources and biodiversity. The natural ecosystem and aquatic resources across the province's rivers and canals play an extremely important role in environmental conservation. However, the current situation is marked by destructive fishing practices using electric shockers and fine-meshed nets, as well as rampant illegal capture and trade of wildlife and migratory birds, all of which are having a severe impact on the ecosystem. In response to these circumstances, Dong Thap Province is adopting an approach of "co-management" to restore dwindling aquatic resources and link their conservation with sustainable tourism development. This initiative aims not only at resource protection but also at revitalizing the local economy, reflecting a part of the local government's regional development strategy under Vietnam's one-party system. Efforts to conserve biodiversity in wetland areas, in particular, are expected to contribute to the maintenance of the Mekong Delta's ecosystem, which garners international attention. These initiatives by Dong Thap Province can be seen as concrete measures at the local level to address the challenge of balancing economic growth with environmental conservation that Vietnam faces.
