Over 25,000 Internally Displaced Persons in Yo Region, Kanpetlet and Mindat Townships, Urgent Need for Emergency Medicine and Food Aid Due to Monsoon Flu Outbreaks

Yangon, July 9 More than 25,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) are currently in Mindat Township, Kanpetlet Township in southern Chin State, and the Yo region of Magway Region. They are in urgent need of emergency medicine and humanitarian assistance due to the outbreak of influenza during the monsoon season, according to those assisting the IDPs. It is known that the military has further reinforced a large number of troops in the Yo region since mid-May 2026 and launched offensives with two columns into Mindat Township in Chin State and one column into Kanpetlet Township. Furthermore, as airstrikes have also been intensified, a large number of local residents have been forced to flee their homes, and the number of IDPs has now reached approximately 25,000. One of the individuals assisting the IDPs stated that the displaced people are facing extremely difficult conditions, and their health and livelihood difficulties are further exacerbated by food shortages, inadequate shelter from the rain in temporary shelters, and the outbreak of monsoon influenza. He said, "The people are enduring immense hardship and suffering, fleeing in hunger and thirst. They are getting monsoon flu, their shelters are insufficient, and their food supplies are also inadequate. The routes for delivering aid are blocked, making the lives of the displaced people extremely pitiable. Children cannot attend school, and they are struggling daily just to survive. They are also being bombed almost daily by aircraft." It is understood that the IDPs are unable to carry out their agricultural activities due to security concerns and are simultaneously facing food shortages and health problems. Especially as influenza is widely prevalent during the monsoon season, there is an urgent need for emergency medicines, nutritious food, and other humanitarian assistance. Due to these circumstances, those assisting the IDPs have appealed to donors both domestically and internationally, as well as the public, to collectively provide the necessary food, medicine, and other aid for the displaced people. On the other hand, the military, which is facing casualties and losses during the fighting, continues to carry out airstrikes. Local sources have reported that on July 9, at 11:08 AM and 11:12 AM, a jet fighter that took off from Taungoo Air Base dropped four bombs twice on a location in the eastern part of Mindat Township.
