Cotabato City Intensifies Stray Dog Campaign After 3 Bitten by Rabid Canine

COTABATO CITY — The Cotabato City Veterinary Office has intensified its campaign against stray dogs after three people were bitten by a rabid dog last Monday in Barangay Rosary Heights 2, prompting health authorities to conduct contact tracing and urge residents to seek immediate medical attention after any dog bite. Dr. Robert Malcontento, city veterinarian, said that the rabid dog was confirmed in the area and that one of the three bitten individuals sustained minor injuries, while the other two had moderate wounds. They are currently undergoing post-exposure prophylaxis. Malcontento stressed that the increasing number of stray dogs poses a public health threat and urged the public to avoid approaching stray animals. He also advised pet owners to ensure their dogs are vaccinated against rabies regularly. The city government plans to boost its efforts in capturing stray dogs and transferring them to animal shelters. Awareness campaigns will also be conducted to educate the public about the risks associated with rabies and the importance of responsible pet ownership. Rabies is a zoonotic disease that is almost always fatal once clinical symptoms appear. Prompt intervention through vaccination is crucial for preventing the disease.
