Jakarta Equips All RWs with Fire Extinguishers Amid Drought Season

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has announced that fire extinguishers (APAR) have been made available in every neighborhood unit (RW) across the capital. This measure is intended as an anticipation of fires in Jakarta during the dry season. Pramono stated that he had instructed his staff to provide APARs in each RW and confirmed that this program is currently underway. "I also wanted to ensure that APARs are available in every RW, so that if anything happens, we have taken our anticipatory steps together," said Pramono at Monas, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (2/9/2026). When asked about the scope of APAR provision at the neighborhood level, Pramono mentioned that each RW is targeted to have an APAR. He expressed confidence that this program has now been fulfilled. "For APARs, I asked every RW to have them, and because this program has been running, I am confident that every RW now possesses them," he stated. Separately, Pramono underscored the importance of readiness in facing the dry season. According to reports from the Jakarta Metropolitan Disaster Management Agency (BPBD DKI Jakarta), a total of 457 fire incidents occurred in Jakarta throughout July and August 2026. Specifically in August, the number of fires reached 240 cases. Pramono identified electrical short circuits as the most dominant cause of fires. Other reasons cited include the burning of garbage and the negligence of residents in disposing of cigarette butts. "The most dominant cause is electrical short circuits. Then, the second is garbage burning, and there are also several incidents that occurred due to residents' carelessness in disposing of cigarette butts and so on," Pramono explained. West Jakarta was the region with the highest number of fires, followed by East Jakarta. According to Pramono, Tambora and Cakung sub-districts are areas with a high potential for fires.
