Cambodia, Japan Seek Stronger Partnership Through Expanded Parliamentary Ties

TOKYO, Aug 5, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia and Japan are seeking to deepen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership by strengthening political dialogue, parliamentary diplomacy and economic cooperation, officials said Wednesday. The commitment was highlighted during a meeting between Chum Sounry, Cambodia’s ambassador to Japan, and Tadamori Fujisawa, a member of Japan’s House of Representatives and the International Bureau of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, at the Cambodian Embassy in Tokyo. Both sides exchanged views on enhancing political relations, parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation between the embassy and the LDP’s International Bureau. Sounry reaffirmed that Cambodia places the highest priority on its friendship with Japan, praising Tokyo’s contributions to peacebuilding, reconstruction and socio‑economic development. He welcomed continued implementation of the Cambodia–Japan Co‑Creation Economic Package, describing it as a key framework for expanding bilateral economic cooperation. The ambassador proposed establishing a regular communication mechanism between the embassy and the LDP’s International Bureau, and pledged to facilitate exchanges with Cambodia’s Senate, National Assembly and government agencies. He also encouraged greater interaction between young political leaders and parliamentarians from both countries. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close cooperation to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, deepen political and economic engagement, and reinforce the longstanding friendship between Cambodia and Japan.
