Vietnam to Significantly Increase Citizenship and Naturalization Fees for Foreigners

The Vietnamese government has issued a decree significantly increasing fees for foreign nationals seeking citizenship and naturalization, with the new regulations set to take effect on August 1. Under the revised rules, the application fee for foreign spouses seeking Vietnamese citizenship through marriage will rise by 67% from the current VND15 million (approximately US$834) to VND25 million (approximately US$1,390) per application. For other foreign nationals applying for Vietnamese citizenship through the standard naturalization process, the fee will also see a substantial jump, increasing from VND50 million to VND75 million. Furthermore, the declaration fee for children with dual citizenship to formally choose Vietnamese citizenship will double, from VND1 million to VND2 million. Vietnam is the most populous country in Southeast Asia, with its population estimated to be between 283 million and 288 million people. In recent years, Vietnam has experienced remarkable economic growth, attracting significant foreign investment. However, the country also navigates its one-party system of governance and faces social challenges arising from rapid development. This fee increase is understood to be part of the government's efforts to bolster state revenue.
