Hanoi's Ngoc Thuy Park Balancing Pond Suffers Prolonged Odor and Pollution

The balancing pond in Ngoc Thuy Park, located in Bo De ward, Long Bien district, Hanoi, is facing severe environmental issues shortly after its operational launch. Once envisioned as a "green lung" for the area, the pond is now covered in algae, its water discolored, and emitting a strong foul odor, raising concerns among local residents about their health and living environment. This situation highlights the challenges of balancing rapid urbanization and infrastructure development with environmental conservation in Vietnam. In recent years, Hanoi has actively promoted the construction of balancing ponds aimed at flood control and urban beautification. However, the case of Ngoc Thuy Park suggests the risks of new infrastructure failing and underscores the importance of maintenance systems. Under Vietnam's one-party system, while large-scale government-led development projects are promoted, challenges remain in areas such as adherence to environmental standards and incorporating local resident feedback. The tendency to prioritize economic growth at the expense of environmental considerations is a significant point in Vietnam's sustainable development discourse. Furthermore, while Vietnam has strong economic ties with China, its domestic environmental management practices can also influence international perceptions. The issue of the balancing pond's foul odor extends beyond mere aesthetics, posing public health risks. Residents are calling for prompt, expert investigations and the implementation of fundamental solutions. It is hoped that this problem will serve as an opportunity to re-evaluate environmental management practices in Hanoi.
