Tarlac Bridge Collapse: One Fatality Found, Search Continues for Three Others

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga, Philippines — The remains of James Patrick Taborlupa, one of four individuals reported missing after their vehicle fell into a river during a bridge collapse in Tarlac City on Saturday, were recovered in Pangasinan on Monday. Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel discovered Taborlupa's body in the waters off Barangay Carael in Lingayen. A motorized boat operator spotted the body off the coast of Barangay Pugaro and alerted authorities. Tarlac City Mayor Susan Yap confirmed that the recovered remains belong to one of the passengers of the Toyota Avanza that plunged into the river when a section of the Agana Bridge in Barangay Tibag collapsed. Authorities are still searching for the remaining three victims: Paul Harvey Collado, Shaella Mae Taborlupa, and Shoren Tuhaw. Nathaniel Dizon, another passenger, was rescued on the night of the accident. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about aging infrastructure and maintenance issues prevalent across the Philippines. In provincial areas especially, the safety of transportation networks is crucial for local economies and the daily lives of residents, making infrastructure upgrades a pressing concern. Separately, a nine-year-old boy drowned after falling into a river in Guagua, Pampanga, on the same Saturday.
