Cambodia Urges UN for Stricter Measures on Prolonged Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute

Cambodia is strongly urging the United Nations to take stricter measures to resolve the ongoing border dispute with Thailand. Mr. Keo Chia, a Cambodian diplomat at the UN headquarters in New York, reiterated the importance of peaceful resolution based on international law during a high-level open debate of the UN Security Council on July 23, 2026. He called for a renewed global commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and adherence to international law. This appeal comes amid Cambodia's claims of territorial incursions by Thailand. According to reports, the conflict, which marks one year on July 24, 2026, originated from an incident on May 28, 2025, where Brigadier General Suon Ron of the Cambodian army was killed in a shooting incident at the Triple Junction in Preah Vihear province. Since then, military tensions have escalated along the Cambodia-Thailand border, and despite international intervention and ceasefire agreements, the dispute has become prolonged. In this protracted situation, the Cambodian permanent representative highlighted several priorities, emphasizing the strengthening of the UN's role in diplomatic prevention and ensuring that conflicts are resolved through peaceful means and in accordance with International Court of Justice rulings. Furthermore, he demanded enhanced unity and impartiality within the Security Council and addressing the humanitarian impact of the ongoing Cambodia border conflict, noting that over 20,000 civilians remain displaced. At the end of his statement, Mr. Keo Chia stressed to the UN Security Council that borders and sovereignty must not be altered by force or by unilaterally changing the situation on the ground. It is recalled that on July 24, 2025, Thai troops launched an attack on Cambodian border defense forces and expanded their offensive along the border area. During the first armed invasion by the Thai military into Cambodian territory from July 24 to July 27, 2025, there were casualties and destruction of property. Civilian sites, including pagodas, schools, hospitals, and ancient Cambodian temples, were damaged, while tens of thousands of Cambodian citizens were forced to leave their homes to escape heavy artillery shelling by the Thai military.
