Lao President Urges Vientiane Province to Accelerate Development, Addresses Vangvieng Tourism Challenges

The Head of State of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, during a working visit to Vientiane Province, strongly urged for the acceleration of efforts to achieve the province's development targets. He specifically called for the restoration of the Nam Song River, addressing social issues, and maintaining the quality of tourist attractions to support sustainable tourism in Vangvieng District, which aims to achieve international recognition. The President called on the provincial Party Committee and administration to continue implementing the resolutions of the 12th Party Congress and the 7th Vientiane Provincial Party Congress to ensure development targets are achieved. He demanded tougher action against illegal mining, closer coordination between central, provincial, and district authorities, stricter land management, and improved coordination between districts and subdistricts to strengthen grassroots administration. According to reports, Vientiane Province's economy grew by 3.4 percent in the first half of 2026, with its gross domestic product (GDP) reaching 12.43 trillion kip, and per capita income estimated at US$1,154. Budget revenue totaled 975.72 billion kip, and the province welcomed approximately 1.93 million tourists. Furthermore, poverty has been eradicated across the province, with 97 percent of residents having access to clean water. However, despite the rich natural attractions and improving infrastructure in Vangvieng District, challenges were noted, including traffic congestion, the deteriorating condition of National Road 13 North, the protection of the Nam Song River, and the environmental impacts of mining activities. The President emphasized that overcoming these challenges is essential for developing Vangvieng into an internationally recognized tourist destination.
