Dengue Outbreak in Myanmar’s Rakhine State Kills Three, Over 150 Infected

At least three people have died, and 158 cases of dengue fever have been recorded in territories controlled by the Arakan Army (AA) in Arakan (Rakhine) State, local health authorities announced on July 30. The Department of Public Health under the Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government reported that 155 patients are currently undergoing treatment. The fatalities include a 17-month-old toddler from Ramree Township, alongside two adults—aged 27 and 36—from Waithali Village in Mrauk-U Township. The first dengue case of the year in the region was detected on April 28, and infections have steadily spread across multiple townships during the monsoon season. Health officials warned that transmission risks remain high through the monsoon months and announced targeted prevention and vector control measures throughout August and September. The public has been urged to take anti-mosquito precautions and seek immediate medical attention at local facilities if symptoms develop. Dengue transmission remains a recurring health threat in western Myanmar, where Arakan (Rakhine) State recorded 2,452 cases and eight deaths in 2025.
