Cambodia and South Korea Discuss Strengthening Ties Amidst Investment and Tourism Focus

PHNOM PENH, Sept 22, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Acting Head of State Samdech Techo Hun Sen has held talks with former South Korean National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin‑pyo on strengthening relations between the two countries, a Senate spokesperson said Tuesday. The meeting took place Sept 21 at the Senate’s Samdech Techo Hun Sen Solidarity Palace during Kim’s visit to Cambodia, according to spokesperson Chea Thyrith. Samdech Techo welcomed Kim and said his visit would help further develop ties between Phnom Penh and Seoul. Kim thanked Samdech Techo for the reception and said relations were in good shape, expressing hope for expanded cooperation, including more South Korean tourists visiting Cambodia. Samdech Techo described South Korea as an important partner, particularly in investment, and encouraged Kim to help attract more South Korean investors. The two sides also discussed economic and trade cooperation. Cambodia and South Korea established diplomatic relations in 1997 after ties were severed in 1975. Since then, cooperation has expanded across political, development, cultural and people‑to‑people exchanges. The relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2024 during Prime Minister Hun Manet’s official visit to Seoul, providing a framework to broaden cooperation in trade, investment, development and international affairs.
