Marcos Orders Heightened Security for BARMM Elections

President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. has ordered security forces to ensure peaceful and orderly elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) ahead of its first regular parliamentary elections on September 14, Malacañang said on Monday. “The President wants, and his directive is, for the BARMM elections to be peaceful, safe, and free,” Palace Press Officer Clarissa A. Castro told a news briefing in Filipino. She said the Philippine National Police is validating a report linking more than 200 deaths recorded from Jan. 1 to July 28 to the BARMM elections. Police operations are focused on dismantling private armed groups, with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine Coast Guard, and Commission on Elections coordinating security preparations. Ms. Castro said 8,299 police personnel have been deployed for election duties, adding that recent violent incidents in the region were rooted in personal disputes and not election-related. — Erika Mae P.
