Cambodia Issues Guidelines for Traditional Pchum Ben Festival

The Ministry of Cults and Religion in Cambodia has issued guidelines for the observance of the traditional Pchum Ben festival, a significant Buddhist event held annually. The directive, addressed to Buddhist temples, religious leaders, and the faithful nationwide, emphasizes the religious and cultural importance of Pchum Ben, a festival dedicated to honoring ancestors and deceased compatriots and accumulating merit. The ministry highlighted the festival's spiritual significance and instructed temples to utilize any donations received during the festival, such as food and snacks, to assist orphans, the elderly, disabled individuals, refugees, and others facing hardship. Furthermore, the guidelines encourage the decoration of temples and public spaces with national, Buddhist, and royal flags, as well as banners and slogans, to celebrate the occasion in accordance with Buddhist traditions and foster national unity. Temples are also urged to clean and decorate the resting places for the remains of those who perished during the Khmer Rouge regime, as a gesture of remembrance.
