Former Speaker Romualdez arrives at QC Jail amid plunder charges

Former Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez has been transferred to the Quezon City Jail, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) confirmed. Romualdez arrived at the Payatas facility at 10:49 p.m. and is currently undergoing standard booking procedures, including medical evaluation, fingerprinting, mugshot, interview, and orientation. The charges against Romualdez are for plunder, in connection with alleged kickbacks amounting to P7.2 billion from government infrastructure projects. His co-accused, former Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co, Samchan Foreign Exchange Corp. president Felicito Guevarra, and Romualdez’s personal assistant Joselin Sereño, remain at large. Several other officials facing plunder charges before the Sandiganbayan are also detained at the QC Jail in Payatas, including Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Rodante Marcoleta, and former Anak Kalusugan party-list Rep. Michael Defensor. In a statement, Romualdez expressed respect for the Sandiganbayan’s decision. "I have always said that I will face the charges against me and answer them before the proper court. That has not changed," he stated. "I maintain my innocence. I will face the case. I will answer the allegations." He also extended his gratitude to the doctors who attended to him. The Sandiganbayan committed Romualdez to the male dormitory of the Quezon City Jail. He had been hospitalized since his arrest, first at Cardinal Santos Medical Center and then at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH). Doctors from PGH informed the Sandiganbayan that his condition was stable enough not to require further hospitalization. The Third Division of the court has set his arraignment for Wednesday, September 16, at 8:30 in the morning. The court's order mandates that Romualdez be held as a detention prisoner and not be moved, removed, transferred, or released unless ordered by the court. This development highlights ongoing issues of political corruption in the Philippines and the judicial process.
